It’s cool, we all do sometimes. Are you fucking owning the roads and trails? Tell me–I love this motivation and inspiration.
Email me, you glorious people: krissy@badcaseoftheruns.com

Okay guys, let’s get back to talking about another one of those running topics–This week:

Cross training, something we talked about when I mentioned what workouts would be helpful to implement for beginners or people looking to improve their running. So, okay what exactly is cross training?

We cover that in this week’s episode. Listen above.

A couple of short good youtube videos will be linked on BadCaseoftheRuns.com

So this all said, guys, I think we need to come up with some sort of challenge to get this in. Because, although I know it is good for me–I am absolutely terrible at it. I need to write in up on a calendar, or have people remind me to do it. I know it’s good for me, so I don’t know why I can’t do it more often. WE’ve talked about routine so much, I think it’s time to really get this in along with the stretching and strength too. And the thing is, cross training can incorporate strength, so why not? Now that it’s July, maybe that’s a goal to set for myself since at the end of the this month = the start of my marathon training. #facepalm

Topic of the week

Track workouts

Resource: Active.com

Classic Quarters
There’s no better way to get to know a track than to run this workout. It ebbs and flows between hard and easy, and boosts your speed and fitness.
Warm-up: Jog four laps (1 mile)
Repeat 4 times:
• HARD: Run one lap at a hard, but controlled effort. The goal is to push hard, but not so hard that you can’t finish the workout.
• EASY: Take one lap to recover by walking until you catch your breath. Jog easy the rest of the way.
Cooldown: Run easy for one lap and walk one lap

100s
A short, powerful workout to improve your running form.
Warm-up: Jog four laps
• Break the track into two parts, the straight-a-ways and the corners.
• Sprint the straight-a-ways (100 meters), and walk the corners to recover. Repeat this for 1 mile.
Cooldown: Walk one lap

Banana Relays
This is a fun, social workout that builds community, speed and stamina. All you need is a banana (aka baton) and a teammate.
Warm-up: Jog four laps
• Run two laps (800 meters or about a half-mile) at a comfortably hard effort (not hard, not easy) and, upon finishing, pass the banana to your buddy.
• While he or she is running two laps, walk to the start to recover.
• Repeat this four times for a total of 2 miles.
Cooldown: Jog two laps at an easy effort with your buddy

1, 2, 3s
A longer, more challenging track workout that teaches you how to pace yourself.
Warm-up: Jog four laps
• 1: Run one lap at a hard, but controlled effort. Walk while you catch your breath, then jog until you reach one lap.
• 2: Run two laps at a hard, but controlled effort. Walk while you catch your breath, then jog until you reach one lap.
• 3: Run three laps at a hard, but controlled effort. Walk while you catch your breath, then jog until you reach one lap.
• 2: Run two laps at a hard, but controlled effort. Walk while you catch your breath, then jog until you reach one lap.
• 1: Run one lap at a hard, but controlled effort. Walk while you catch your breath, then jog until you reach one lap.
Cooldown: Walk one lap

I love hearing from you. I did send out another stack of stickers this week—I apologize for the delay again—Just a lot more then I anticipated, so I was playing catch up after wedding weekend. Episode 21-Haven’t we done enough?

Episode 21-Haven’t we done enough?

Episode 21

It’s June, everyone!  So how did May go–116 miles in my book.  Which, again–FOR ME, with the extra rest days last month, I’m pretty pumped, so my unofficial, although now starting to become my office 100 miles/month streak continues!!

Gearing up—another fucking half marathon! Covered Bridges, which totes itself to be the most beautiful 13.1 miles in New England.  Net downhill, one little hill at 5 and one steep ass motherfucker at 8.  The weather looks to be great, 50s at the start which is at 8:15, so I’m hoping it’ll stay in the 60s until after I finish.

Another crazy week. Guess who’s daycare is closing. A-GAIN. Amazing teachers, and it’s just such a bummer. I pay more then my mortgage for daycare—how can that not be financial viable. Wtf. Got the older one secured, and think we have a teacher of Rhett’s coming to the house for him, if we’re so lucky.  *SIGH*
It’s just like, really? What the fuck.

Race reports

Katie B, from Milford CT completed the Rock the Ridge 50 mile relay in Mohonk Preserves, NY.  Their team, Team Fox–finished through mud and rain under 12 hours and raised over $5000 for the Michael J Fox foundation for Parkinson’s Research!  They had more relayers–23 to be exact-that ran parts of the race, and 5 of those runner’s are afflicted with Parkinson’s.  Dude, talk about motivation and absolutely fucking inspiring.  Click to donate to this awesome team/cause.

Llewelyn M., Manitoba, Canada raced the YMCA Strong Kids Run (20k aka almost 12 1/2 miles in the US)  in Brandon, Manitoba (CANADA), and it was her longest run! Way to fucking go! in 2:08, no less! Ah-Mazing!

This Week’s Rundown:
Prepped for the half…kinda… and we probably overdid it

Sunday-5 miles, Monday-10 miles, Tuesday-rest/yoga (with Adriene again!), Wednesday-5k, Thursday-5, Friday-4…

Saturday, stretching and rolling before headed up to the fabulous fucking Super 8 to stay the night before having to hit the race the next morning.  My mom is actually heading up with me the night before, so she’ll be able to drop me off at the start the next morning.

And that’s where we leave off…SUNDAY   What’s going to happen at the Covered Bridges Half marathon?  Can you hardly stand it? Episode 22 will have the entire recap!

Episode 20-I guess spinning ’round in circles better suits you

Episode 20-I guess spinning ’round in circles better suits you

Episode 20?? WHAT?!  Thanks for sticking with me, ya’ll!

This week we have 3 race reports from Holly H., Caitlyn A., and Jenn S.–Congrats on your races ladies!

Weirdly enough this week, one of my old friends posted this picture of Chevy chase, Steve Martin, and Martin short in the pose from Three Amigos fame, but in current times. I got so excited. I watched that movie a lot with my dad growing up, and I just fucking love how silly it is. I know all the songs, and now in my older years can appreciate the little nuances and other humor I missed as a kid. Either way, I’ve been talking about it all fucking week, and suddenly today my husband says, “Hey, I bought something off Amazon for us to watch when the kids go to bed tomorrow night.”

Pulls out—fucking the Three Amigos Blu-ray. You guys. You. Guys. Anyways, that’s my nerd out for the week. So good.

As I sat here writing up my show notes, drinking A Green Head IPA from Newburyport Brewing company, I wanted to mention my new friends:

Podcast mention:
Running, Beers and BS  with my new running friends Johnny and Flores 🙂

To the run down this week:
Sunday was the Wallis Sands Half
Monday-felt amazingly good, so met up with Ella for 4
Tuesday rested-soreness starting to settle in…Wednesday 6, Thursday rest—yoga (Mention: Yoga With Andriene )

Friday-5 hot, sweaty, okay miles outside.

Saturday rest, show notes, recording, and a lot of junk food between birthday parties and family get together it was a long ass day. My weight watchers app basically told me to go fuck myself today.

Sunday/Monday I think we’re gonna do something like 6-10 miles. And… again that’ll be the most this week because we’ll hear down for one more half before the heat totally is on. Covered Bridges Half is next Sunday in VT, and we are so not looking for a PR, but more of the experience. It’s supposed to be gorgeous.I heard it was hard to get into—sells out quickly so immediately got excited and watched the countdown so I could enter the race as soon as registration became available. Don’t fucking tempt me man. Should be good. Hopefully not too hot, but I’ll be prepared for it.

You’ll be able to track me using the RaceJoy App for this race.  If you want to see me crash and burn that is..haha…NO, I’m so not. You can download it, and once I know what my bib is, I’ll go live on Instagram and let you know how to find me.

What did we sign up for this week? Why? Because I can’t help myself…

Capital City Classic 10k by Runner’s Alley! YAY!

My Cap 10k time was 1:04:31 2016–and it was almost 100 degrees that day! But it’s a good course with a
couple choice hills, so we’re gonna see what a difference 2 years and a post baby bod me does.

Cap 10k Finish-2016

Still looking at July races… either Finish at the 50, or the HILLY AF 10k I did back in 2016 in Derry on the 4th: Run for Freedom. Results there, 1:07:51.

Slow death by hill 7/4/2016

At least my calf muscle looks like it’s killing it.

Topic of the week: Improvement for Beginner Runners!

“What are the next steps to improve as I notice endurance increasing?”

Okay, feeling like you’re plateauing is a good thing. What used to be hard isn’t as hard. That’s what you want. Fucking killer.

But you want to keep seeing improvements! I get that. It starts to get addicting man!

Here’s a couple of quick tips to step up the game–and we talk more about these in this episode and will break these down further in future episodes

1)interval training

2)track workouts

3)Fartleks

4)Hills

5)Stretching

6) Cross train

7) Endurance/Increase Mileage little by little

Episode 17-Another mad charade

Episode 17-Another mad charade

Happy Monday, folks.

As usual, we run down the week of running–a solid 23 mile week… and cover a local NH random 5k I did on a Friday night!  It wasn’t an easy course by any means, but I so hope this smaller race gains some more momentum in years to come.  If you love hills, the Angel 5k has one “question the meaning of life” type of hills right in the middle of it.

No, I did not PR…but I did place! 2nd in my age group! WOOT! With a 29:38…okay?

Also squeezed 2 group runs in this week, one which involved my friend Heather bringing her rad ass moped…and letting me ride it.

Another with my sister on Saturday for a gorgeous 3 on what SHOULD have been a rest day.

This week we talk a little about warm/hot weather running and tips for acclimating and staying safe.  I know it was a long winter, so let’s talk about not blowing yourself up on a warm day run.

Product of the Week:

SaltStick’s FastChews!   Easy to take running supplement to bring your Salt, Magnesium, Calcium, and Potassium back up–the big 4 lost when sweating.  Verdict-I love ’em, and I’ve used them for 2-3 months now.  Listen to the episode for more info!

Episode 16-I just love your flashy ways

Episode 16-I just love your flashy ways

This week we go through my runs and how completely shitty one was physically, and on the other side of the coin how awful I felt mentally before another. Blech.

This week, we’re doing a Q & A, and I answering some running questions, but also some factoids about music, beer, and tattoos!

  1. Long Run Hydration–Tailwind
  2. The “Run” Tattoo on my hand:
  3. Stride Length/Pace Question–kind of my opinion on that one!
  4. Favorite Band(s)

    Incubus!

    Queen <3
  5. Shoe?

Nike Pegasus, but the 32s were my fave. I still have them kicking around.

  6. Beer?

    New Holland’s Dragon’s Milk
  7. Eyeliner, cheat sheet and brands?

    Trace and go 🙂

    NYX Liquid Liner

    Kat Von D Tattoo Liner
  8. Shower Beers?!
  9. Making shirts and merch? Yes and yes.  We’re just waiting on the new logo and we’ll start going from there.

Song For Your Running Playlist—today, brought to you by Sarah H of Minnesota! Fucking get DOWN.

Thank you for everyone that submitted a question and song this week–your stickers are coming.  Want one? Reach out to me, kids.  Til’ next week.

Episode 15-You wanna get loud-It’s your god damn right

Episode 15-You wanna get loud-It’s your god damn right

This week, we’re quickly circling back to the Boston Marathon, winners, thoughts, and my plan for it going forward.

Then, we talk about my first trail run–The Rescue Run for Marine Mammals out in gorgeous Rye, NH., and how underestimating myself allowed me to shoot myself square in the foot. Nonetheless, a new fold to my running world has opened up!  A couple of pictures from the race below–a great day for running and toddler fun-even if she was wearing her cranky-pants…

Violet getting her run on, muddy shoes, baby love 🙂

Aaaaaand the results:    30:16  OR 9:45/mile  And it soooo could have been better if I had gone up a wave. GOD DAMMIT! 9:45/mile is still respectable for my first romp through the forest–but still, I know it could have been so much faster. BAH!

*shakes fist*

That all said–I went home and did 3 more with this ham cheering me on..

Topic this week we’re talking about is running and weight loss, the very basics–and tips you can take away.  Suggestions for how to run, time, distance, and some nutrition. And a mini rant on not being sold on the weight loss diets/supplements/bullshit that’s out there.

A couple of resources I mention in the episode:

-HR Calculator

-H20 Calculator

Product of the Week: Crank Sports E-Gel

All things meh.

Episode 14-No Stopping at the Green Light

Episode 14-No Stopping at the Green Light

This we are talking about how old I am and how long it took my ass to recover from my Vegas work trip. Good lord.

We also talk about a really awful week of running, my head not being in it, and what the hell is going on with that.

Then we talk the Boston Marathon–today is Marathon Monday, so why not??  What my plans are for Beantown, and the amazing stats that make up some of the monstrosity (I mean that in the best way possible) that is THE Boston Marathon.

Resource: WalletHub

This week’s product that I honest don’t care for: KT Tape/kinesiology tape.

I don’t know–I looked up the videos and images, and I just did NOT see the benefits.  Maybe my injuries weren’t severe enough, but I still have half a roll of this stuff, and definitely don’t reach for it when I’m hurting.

Episode 12-Down Beside That Red Firelight

Episode 12-Down Beside That Red Firelight

This week we’re talking half-marathon recovery and the difference between now, older, post-kids and five years ago. What I did differently, and what you might be able to take from it; epiphanies I had and what I’m planning going forward.

One more look at me flying and focused at mile 13..for once…

We also talk interval training, how I’ve used it successfully in the past month (ish) and how it can seriously benefit any runner–beginner to advanced/elite.  Below are some articles/resources to get you started:

Interval workouts for beginners–or really if you’re not sure how to start incorporating them

Jeff Galloway–basically the King of Run/Walk/Run.

Run Walk Run

Running Way’s article on walking breaks during the run (aka Intervals)

RunnersConnect Beginning to Advanced guide on Intervals

The Run Experience Walking Breaks for Beginners

Let me know if you try some of these interval workouts–like I mention anyone from beginning to an advanced athlete can benefit from intervals depending on their use and pace, of course, but I think definitely worth a shot!  I, personally, am already reaping the benefits!  So fucking good!

Product o’ the week:

Pine Trail Woodworks out of New Hampshire made your main lady here an awesome, simple, custom running medal holder!  I am in love.  Check them out, and  message them on Facebook to see what they can hook you up with!

Episode 11-We rendezvous a quarter-two

Episode 11-We rendezvous a quarter-two

Hey all!  I did something a little different this week, that maybe I’ll take on for all my race recaps depending how it goes.

1) I waited until the day of the half-marathon to record–which totally gave me anxiety..but I wanted my recap to be as authentic and as fresh to my memory as humanly possible.  That said I still missed a few parts I wanted to mention–so if there are a few shitty jump cuts, sorry.  I’m sure I’ll think of more cool shit I missed and have to touch on it next week.

2) I breezed past a specific product mention today since we’re recapping a race.  That will be back in the original format next week.

So, the On The Run Half Marathon in Old Orchard Beach, ME!

A small race in it’s 2nd year in this seasonal town, with a pretty sweet pre-race food set-up of bagels, donuts, chocolate milk, coffee, water, bananas–I was pretty impressed.  But…the start line wasn’t at the site of registration and bib pick-up?  Okay-sure.

There were a few cons, for sure, if I had to pick out a few things–the start line thing, not a ton of communication before the race via email or social media, the finish line had cars coming in and out of the area which seemed like an oversight.  Also, the finish line pictures cease after like 2:12ish.  Really??? That was a bummer.

But all-in-all, easy to get to, flat (except for one minor uphill-which I’m barely complaining about, haha), good food set-up before and after, had a place to hang to stay warm (more important for family and friends if it had been particularly shitty out.  AND—FREE PHOTOS.  I mean, it took some communicating online to find them, but I did, and easily the most from any race. Yeah, the finish line pictures weren’t there for me–but oh, well.

See if you can find me in the starting photos….

Mile..like 7.5

Mile 13-finally focused and haulin’ that sweet ass…

TO  A FUCKING PR!   2:18!!! YES!! After 2 kids, I beat my pre-preggo time of 2:25 back in 2013… 6 months post-partum.  I will fucking take that everyday–I don’t even need water, it goes down that easily.

Again, listen to the episode for a better run down, these are the Cliff’s Notes version.

Episode 10-Every day is a battle I face

Episode 10-Every day is a battle I face

Hi guys,

This week we’re shooting the shit a little about my being a complete dumpster fire when it comes to doing anything with finesse… Crazy grandparents (not my folks or in-laws, I should preface) and really not knowing how do deal with children.

Then some running recaps for the week, and getting stoked for the On The Run Half Marathon in Old Orchard Beach next weekend.  Dudes, if you’re around, come on down!

This week topic is some VERY BASIC strength training: Why we should do it, when and how often, and what some experts on running say about strength.

Here are the three videos I mentioned in this weeks episodes to take a peek at:

C.Tolle Run-Strength for Runners

Mark Kennedy’s 7-Minute Strength for Runners

PopSugar Fitness Core for Runners

I feel like if you’re yet to incorporate strength training to your running, or just looking for a more streamlined regime to stick to, these videos are a great place to start.  Check them out, let me know what you think, or if you have your favorite videos to share.

Let’s not forget our March promotion with HeeBeeGeebs Granola! Click to email about ordering and getting $1 off a bag when you mention the Bad Case of the Runs Podcast!

My running product for the weekEatYourCoffee bars!

My favorite was easily the Salted Caramel Macchiato, followed by the Fudgy Mocha Latte.  The Peanut Butter Mocha one really wasn’t my jam, but if you like peanut butter and you dig coffee and the combo doesn’t sound too weird, give it a whirl.  That being said, the kick in the ass I got from these bars after about 20 minutes was well worth it, and I certainly wouldn’t turn my nose up at the PB Mocha given the effects!   I DID NOT get the try the Toasted Coconut, but if I get the chance I’ll let you know.   Check out their Instagram feed, too.

Song for your running playlist:

Enjoy this fun, lovely, dreamy little diddy 🙂

I have some fun little nifty gifties I’m working on for people who send me in their songs…so don’t forget, write to me, follow me on Instagram and Facebook where you can message me, too.

You guys are awesome, thank you for stopping by.

Episode 6-Come join in the last hurrah

Episode 6-Come join in the last hurrah

This week we’re talking about something I see a lot of new runners put off…going to the specialty running store to get assessed and fitted for the right pair of running shoes.

We talk about what you can expect, things to keep in the back of your mind, and tips for your first trip in–and HOPEFULLY get your ass in the door!  You won’t regret it.

Here’s the NH stores I’m fond of and mention in the episode:

And NOT by any means the end-all-be-all national list, but a good place to start.  Search by your zip code.  Even if it’s not a location close to you, google search the store name to see if that’s actually the case.  IE: When I enter my zip, the only Runner’s Alley that pops up is in Manchester, when in actuality, they have 3 locations in NH!
